Corporate Background

CEO Marty Hilsenteger, an industrial contractor, founded Singletouch in Calgary, Alberta in 2002. Having successfully built an industrial contracting business in nearby Red Deer, Hilsenteger was well aware of the challenges faced by contractors working in remote locations where industrial construction often takes place.

The dominant challenge was capturing and recording data from the field so that it was properly reflected on reports, invoices and other requirements. Hilsenteger knew that digitizing and streamlining paperwork, reporting and invoicing processes would allow contractors to more easily manage their cash flow and day-to-day business concerns and so better manage the considerable price they were exposed to on large projects.

Finding a solution proved difficult because all the off-the-shelf software products then on offer were no more than accounting packages that did not take into consideration real-world, on-site, data-capture requirements and the reality that information flows from the field into the back office. Hilsenteger set out to develop a comprehensive technology platform that began in the field and flowed into the office that would address the business concerns of contractors while expediting billing and fulfillment, alleviating the potential for transcription errors, and reducing the amount of work for a contracting firm’s accounting staff.

The central element of the Singletouch construction management software is a Windows-based platform called Singletouch Office. The company’s offering also includes both connected and disconnected tools, so that even those on remote jobsites can use the platform. Singletouch Mobile is designed for service and maintenance requirements and operates in disconnected mode on a ruggedized handheld or HP Slate tablet. Singletouch Terminal is an easy to deploy and use touchscreen application that enables workers to input time and attendance on the jobsite. Singletouch Flex is a disconnected time-entry system for construction sites in remote areas that have poor or non-existent Internet connections.

The full platform lets both home office and jobsite take advantage of the tool simultaneously, with real-time data available both on site and at the office. The platform easily integrates and shares data with traditional accounting, payroll and other reporting software, in addition to generating its own customizable reports. Once data has been inputted, project managers and office administrators can use the data for reporting and invoicing, even before the team has returned from the site.

With offices in both the U.S. and Canada, Singletouch is led by Hilsenteger and president Scott Sheppard.
